Competency: To serve with a high standard of quality and effort, knowing that our work is an act of worship to God.
Why This Matters: We serve a God who is infinitely excellent and who gave His absolute best—His Son—for us. We pursue excellence in our service as a grateful response to His love, not as a way to earn it. Our quality work honors Him and demonstrates His worth to others.
What is the difference between 'excellence' and 'perfectionism'? Why is that distinction important in ministry?
Read: Colossians 3:23-24
Who is our ultimate 'Audience' when we serve in the church? How does that change the way we view even small or mundane tasks?
What 'inheritance' do you think Paul is talking about as our reward?
Excellence in ministry means bringing our best effort to our work because the One we work for is worthy of our best. It is an attitude of the heart that leads to practical actions. It looks like being prepared for your role before you arrive. It means anticipating needs, paying attention to details, and following through on commitments.
This is different from perfectionism, which is often rooted in fear. Excellence is motivated by love for God and love for the people we serve. It recognizes that while we will not be perfect, we can always be prepared. When we serve with excellence, we create an environment where people are cared for well and are more open to hearing the message of the Gospel.
What does excellence look like practically in the specific role you are serving in? Give one or two examples?
Where does the motivation for your 'best work' typically come from? A desire to honor God, or a desire to impress people? Explain.
How can we offer our best without becoming stressed or legalistic about it?
